TOKYO -- "The Golden Compass" has had a golden bow at the Japanese B.O.. Skedded for a wide release by Gaga on March 1, the pic scooped Y270 million ($2.5 million) in advance screenings on February 23 and 24. The aud demo was wider than expected, mixing in families, teens of both sexes and even fans in their fifties and sixities.

Gaga has not yet set a B.O. tarrget, but the pic's take was 159 percent that of similar sneaks last year for "Night at the Museum," which scooped $33.4 million in Japan. A straight line B.O. projection would be $51 million -- not "Harry Potter" territory, but not bad for a pic that finished in the US with $70 million.

Gaga will release "The Golden Compass" on March 1 on nearly 700 screens.
