BANGKOK – Thailand's Department of Special
Investigations is expected Friday to announce results of its investigation into
corruption allegations involving Juthamas Siriwan, the former head of the
Bangkok Int'l Film Festival.
Announcement
comes in the week that trial was to have begun in Los Angeles of "Rescue
Dawn" producer Gerald Green and his wife Patricia, on charges of making
bribes to secure management contracts to run the festival. Trial was postponed
on Feb 1 until September.
The FBI affidavit detailing the scam
does not name the recipient of more than $900,000 in bribes, but clearly
identifies her as the then-governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand and
president of the festival, Siriwan.
Col. Piyawat Kingket, commander of DSI's Special Crime Office, said his agency
will submit reports on the alleged bribery payments to Siriwan to the Office of
the National Counter Corruption Commission, Thai news agency MCOT reported.
Co-owners of Los Angeles-based Film
Festival Management, the Greens were arrested Dec. 17 and indicted Jan. 17.
Each is charged with one count of conspiracy to bribe a foreign public official
in violation of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and six substantive counts of
violating the FCPA.
The DSI was given a limited time to investigate the Siriwan and other
corruption cases. The NCCC could choose move to trial, drop the case or launch
a fuller investigation if it feels necessary.
The Greens pleaded not guilty to all
the charges and were released on bail pending the trial. Siriwan has also proclaimed
her innocence and threatened to sue the FBI.
