HOLLYWOOD -- New Line fantasy “The Golden Compass” has passed censorship review in China and will be released by the China Film Group and Hua Xia on 300-400 screens beginning March 28.

The film has grossed more than $322 million worldwide since its Dec. 7 release -- $70 million domestically and an impressive $252 million in overseas markets, which New Line sold off to finance the pic.

“The Golden Compass” will open in Japan on March 1. New Line noted that the pic is one of only a handful of American feature films that will be released in China this year.
