Asian films take top honors at Rotterdam Print E-mail

HONG KONG - Asian films Friday took two of the top three prizes on offer at the Int'l Film Festival Rotterdam.

Post-tsunami pic "Wonderful Town" by Thailand's Aditya Assarat and Liew Seng Tat's "Flower in the Pocket" picked up Tiger Awards from the main competition section for first-time or sophomore helmers. The other winner was Danish-made film "Go With Peace Jamal" by Omar Shargawi. Prizes are worth Euros 15,000 ($21,500) and guarantee TV broadcast on Netherlands pubcaster VPRO.

In the NETPAC section, which is only open to Asian movies, winner was "What on Earth Have I Done Wrong?" by Niu Doze Chen-zer from Taiwan. Jury described it as "a debut film that has deftly crafted a humorous drama that mocks filmmaking with great sensitivity and arrives at a profound insight into the human condition."

NETPAC runner up was "Crude oil," (Cai you ri ji) by Wang Bing from China.
